The College invests heavily in our Social & Emotional Pathways Program (SEP) to ensure student engagement in a rich and valuable program. Each Year level has at least one period a week with their SEP teacher to build stronger connections to their peers. Each year-level based program has a clearly defined purpose, with links into our broader goal of the program which is:
‘To develop future-focused students who have an active engagement with the political, social, economic and environmental global landscape, now and into the future. To support students to think critically, ethically and to actively engage as young citizens in their community.’
Year 7 Launch
Our Year 7 Launch students actively participated in the Peer Support sessions to build connections to their peers early in the year. We then provide support to help them as learners within the Learn2Learn program during Term 2. Respectful Relationships for a key part of the year with lessons on how to be a good friend and ways to develop empathy. Students also participate in clubs and the Student Leadership process.
Year 8 Launch
Year 8 Launch begins with some key Respectful Relationship sessions on consent, gender stereotypes and help seeking. We then provide support to help them as learners within the Learn2Learn program during Term 2. Students also participate in clubs and the Student Leadership process.
Year 7 to 9 Passion Projects
Our Passion Project curriculum has a clear path from Year 7 to Year 9. In Year 7, students learn the enquiry skills required to achieve success. By Year 8, students create a poster or video ‘pitch’ about what areas of the school they would like to improve, or social issues they would like to advocate for. This culminates into Year 9 LEAD where students chose their own Passion Project and work on this for a semester. Some projects that students have developed are redesigning our school sports uniform, increasing awareness of people who are homeless, improving accessibility to sporting venues, and creating a piece of art for the school.
Year 9 LEAD
After students complete their LEAD Passion Project, they actively participate in their LEAD City Experience project where they create their own inquiry questions about how to make Melbourne CBD more safe, resilient and sustainable. This develops their collaboration and provide opportunities to connect their learning to the real world.
Year 10 Future Ready Program
Our Year 10 Future Ready class delivers the VCE Industry and Enterprise Unit 1 to assist students to get ready for the workplace and work experience. Most students receive a VCE unit when they complete and submit work to an expected standard. The second unit is life skills and study skills focused on preparing for VCE.
Year 11 VCE & Me
Year 11 has a myriad of presenters to help students build skills for their final year of schooling. Presentations cover sleep hygiene, mental fitness and revision skills for exams. Students have time in class to practice study skills like the pomodoro technique and to work with their House Leaders on time management and organisation.
Year 12 Secrets to Success
Year 12 Secrets to Success program at La Trobe Uni is conducted at the beginning of the year. There are alumni speakers throughout the year and VTAC presentations towards Term 4.
