Clubs

Viewbank College offers a variety of clubs at break times that create a friendly and welcoming space for students to explore new interests, make friends, and fully engage in school life. Each club adds excitement to the school week, offering opportunities for creativity, personal growth, connection, and fun.

Clubs cover a wide range of interests—from creative arts, music, and performance to academic challenges, storytelling and games, sports and physical activity, wellbeing, leadership, and community initiatives. Whether it’s expressing yourself through art, staying active, exploring new ideas, caring for the environment, or finding a supportive space to belong, there’s something for everyone.

New ideas are always celebrated, and students are encouraged to start clubs based on their passions. Student-led initiatives are an important part of shaping a positive, welcoming, and dynamic club culture at Viewbank College.

Together, these clubs reflect the caring, connected, and community-focused spirit of Viewbank College—an environment where students can discover what they love, grow their skills, and truly shine.

Viewbank College’s STEAM program provides a wide array of opportunities for students across all year levels, creating a deep engagement within STEAM from an early age.

Our Year 7 students have the chance to serve as student ambassadors at the Banyule-Nillumbik Tech School, gaining early exposure to leadership roles within the STEAM community. They can also participate in the Science Talent Search, the biannual student-led STEAM conference, and join STEAM and sustainability clubs.

The STEAM Futures academy offers students an opportunity to gain school micro-credentials in wide ranging topics such as Cyber security, AI Prompt Engineering, Robotics, 3D Design and Printing and physics and space programs. These experiences allow our students to develop STEAM literacy and explore potential career paths in STEAM fields early on.

Furthermore, Year 7 students benefit from the mentorship of older peers, including Year 9 students who participated in the RMIT Women in STEAM program, where they were mentored by PhD and Master’s level Scientists and further pass on their knowledge to Year 7 students.

We take pride not only in the variety of experiences we offer but also in the strong relationships we have built with leading scientists, institutions, and our older student mentors. Our commitment to excellence is reflected in the numerous awards our school has earned, including the Hugh McKnight and Peter Craig awards for the Science Talent Search, the Resource Smart Schools Award for sustainability initiatives, and various awards for the Swinburne Youth Space Innovation Challenge. We are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of innovators and leaders in STEAM.

Drama games is run by our Year 12 Drama Captain each year and is a space for fun, acceptance and safety. We run this on Tuesdays at break 1 and run improv games, drama activities, and occasionally run some Just Dance! To be honest, there’s a lot of Just Dance! Everyone is welcome as long as you come with positive vibes and a willingness to get involved!

Chess Club started in Term 4 of 2024 as a result of a group of Year 7’s coming up with the idea for their Launch Passion Project. Since then, it has been running every Thursday during Break 1 with students in all year levels and of all abilities coming to play chess.

In 2025 members of the Chess Club had a guest tutor come in and teach them some strategy and we participated in 2 tournaments at other schools run by Northern Star Chess. We had several successful players at these tournaments making it to the Chess State Final.

We have our first Viewbank College Chess Tournament in Term 4, 2025 and will be holding a tournament run by Northern Star Chess for other schools to enter at Viewbank in Term 2 2026.

Do you want to play in a band led by you and your friends? Then come along and join Music Club, Every Wednesday and Thursday in first break.

You will get a chance to learn the songs you want and play guitar/bass/drums/keys/singing or any instrument you already learn. You will also learn how to jam with other musicians, set up amps/PA’s and get help in writing your own music. Members will perform at lunch time concerts, battle of the bands and lots of other opportunities through out year.

You don’t need to be enrolled in instrumental lessons. It’s open for ALL year levels and ALL abilities.

Message Mr Krieg on teams and let him know what members are coming and what equipment you will need. For regular members, you will be added to the ‘Music Room Booking Chat’ – Here you can book a room at the start of the week.

Music Club Expectations.

  • When you walk in make note of how the room was setup
  • No Food! – please eat outside.

No ‘Groupies’ in the room. If you want to be in the room – You must be playing an instrument.

At the end of session.

  • As soon as you hear the first bell, you need to quickly pack up.
  • All equipment returned to where you got it from.
  • No rubbish or food left behind.
  • Lights/AC off and door locked as you leave.

There are usually guitars & basses to borrow in G12 and amps and drum kits in most rooms. However, if you can, it is better to bring your own. For hygiene reasons, Woodwind & Brass instruments will not be available to borrow.

  • If you’re experienced on your instrument and already have a full band with songs chosen, you can jump straight into rehearsal. We’ll help with gear setup and give you a space to practise.
  • If you’re experienced but missing a few band members, start by learning your parts confidently on your own or in a duet. Let us know what instruments you’re looking for and we’ll help connect you with other musicians across the school.
  • If you have some experience, we can provide resources to help you build your instrumental skills and learn how to rehearse effectively with others. It’s a good idea to bring your laptop so you can look up music, tabs, chords, or follow online tutorials during sessions.
  • If you’re a beginner just starting out, we’ll give you instrument-specific guidance, easy song options, and simple music to get you going. For example, you might learn guitar or drums with a friend — no need to form a full band right away. That can come later once you feel more confident.
