Viewbank College boasts a longstanding tradition in the performing arts, highlighted by its annual College and Middle School Productions. These events represent a remarkable collaboration of music, dance, and drama, offering a platform for students to showcase their talents and develop crucial skills.
The College Production, a musical involving engaging between 130 and 150 students from years 7 to 12 each year. Participants can take on various roles, including on stage, backstage, and within the orchestra. Students passionate about singing, dancing, or acting can audition for a role, while others may choose production roles such as stage crew, lighting and sound operation, costume design, makeup, and front-of-house. Instrumentalists can perform with the live orchestra. During Production week, students take full responsibility for running the show, with staff stepping back to allow for a truly student-led experience.
The Middle School Production, involving around 100 students from Years 7 to 9, is directed by a senior student, the Drama Captain, supported by Year 10 and Year 11 assistants. This production features an original play, devised and written by a staff member or occasionally a student writer. The Drama Captain and their team manage all aspects of the performance, from directing and rehearsing to organizing the Art Crew and technical elements. While staff facilitate the process, the production is driven by student leadership. Middle school students can engage in various roles, including lighting, sound, stage management, stage crew, art crew, front of house, and acting. This experience not only enhances their acting and technical skills but also fosters teamwork, communication, organization, and management abilities.
